MONROE - New Glarus-Monticello senior Ryan McCoy has made several unofficial Division I college visits, but he wants his running to continue to do the talking.

McCoy did just that on Tuesday, winning the 17th annual Bruess Invitational with a time of 15 minutes, 56 seconds at Twining Park. McCoy finished 1 minute ahead of Monroe junior Ethan Moehn at 16:54. McCoy, who was the Division 2 state champion last year, got off to a strong start.

"I only ran one race over the summer," he said. "I was five seconds faster this year than last year. I'm kind of surprised and happy that I actually beat (last year's time)."

McCoy is focusing on the season in the midst of college visits to Big Ten, Big East and Missouri Valley Conference schools. He can start making official visits Sept. 1.

"It's definitely a clean slate," McCoy said of this season. "It has to be every team's goal to make it to state. Any team can beat anyone on any given day."

Moehn wasn't surprised with McCoy's performance.

"Ryan is the best runner in the state of Wisconsin in my mind until someone proves me otherwise," Moehn said. "By no shape or form was I trying to keep up with Ryan. It's hot and I wasn't feeling great. I just wanted to win the battle with the kid from Hempstead. I'm just glad I could get that done."

Dubuque Hempstead edged the Cheesemakers to win the team title 48-55. The Cheesemakers had three of the top six runners. In addition to Moehn, senior Steve Christiansen finished fifth (17:20) and junior Jake Hirsbrunner was sixth (17:43).

"I'm pretty confident if it comes down to the kick that Ethan will out-kick anyone next to him," Monroe coach Dave Hirsbrunner said. "I expected it from Ethan and Steve. We really didn't think we would have a guy in sixth place. Jake was a pleasant surprise. Our first three guys ran really well and did their job. They gave us a chance."

"I think we are all where we need to be at this point in the season," Christiansen said. "We are not training for this meet. We are training for state. I think we will all improve as the season goes on."

Hempstead just finished ahead of the Cheesemakers after their No. 5 runner Nick Klein took 14th ahead of Monroe's Jeremy Miller at 16th (18:16) and senior David Kelly at 26th.

"David Kelly really stepped up into that spot," Hirsbrunner said of the Cheesemakers' No. 5 runner.

A.J. Cifuentes didn't run for Monroe since he was out of town, and Payton Hoesly ran after suffering a shin injury in last week's Monroe alumni meet.

"We are excited to finish where we did without (Cifuentes)," Hirsbrunner said. "We need to get (Hoesly) back to full strength."

New Glarus-Monticello (121) finished fourth and Albany was fifth. New Glarus-Monticello senior Alexander Yeiser took 19th (18:27). Fellow senior Brock Westby-Hess finished 32nd (19:12), junior Caleb Fredrickson took 34th (19:22) and junior Young-Chul Vetterli was 35th (19:31). The Comets had three of the top 31 runners led by sophomore Brennan Bloedel who finished 17th (18:17). Albany sophomore Aaron Johnson took 22nd (18:32) and senior Johnny Kallgren was 31st (19:11).
