Hart-beat of Warriors picks up in second half

BLANCHARDVILLE - This just in: Joey Hartwig has a gift for the game of basketball.

The Warriors senior went off for 18 of his game-high 22 points in the second of a 47-37 Six Rivers East road victory Friday night.

"We just didn't have an answer for him," Pecatonica coach Jim Syse said. "He's very physical and we rotated guys on him."

Junior forward Michael Place stole some of Pecatonica's attention with 12 points while Brandon Meudt led the Vikings with 14 points.

Black Hawk (16-1, 9-1 Six Rivers East) was able to steadily build its lead despite playing a slower tempo than its preference.

The tempo will no doubt be feverish Thursday night when the Warriors welcome Monticello in a rematch after the Ponies handed them their first loss of the season.

Albany 42

Dusty Ritschard got in, got hot and got home safely.

After his classmate, senior point guard D.J. McGowan, hit two 3-pointers to open Friday's home game, Ritschard splashed two long bombs of his own near the top of the key to cap an 18-2 run from which the Ponies (12-4, 9-1 Six Rivers East) never looked back.

Ritschard scored a game-high 14 points and hit two more 3s in the second quarter. Tyler Bauman led a very balanced Comets attack with eight points.

Before Thursday's showdown in South Wayne, the Ponies will piggyback with their female counterparts Monday night. The boys will tip off a makeup home game with Madison Abundant Life Christian at 6 p.m. before the girls take the court at their regularly-scheduled time of 7:30. Albany hosts Juda on Thursday.

Juda 47, Argyle 36

The Panthers got a bit cerebral Friday night.

Facing an Argyle (4-11, 1-8 Six Rivers East) team that came out recognizably quicker, Juda turned to crisp execution in a 25-9 run over the middle two quarters to lock down a victory at home.

The Panthers (8-7, 4-5) properly diagnosed Argyle's constantly-changing defensive looks as Beau Benner scored a game-high 19 points and Kurtis Mansfield added a dozen. Lee Bohlman led Argyle with 16 points.

"They try to keep you off balance, but we did a lot of good things in terms of diagnosing what we were seeing," Juda coach Andy Werner said.

Argyle travels to Barneveld Thursday night.

Darlington 52, Iowa-Grant 51

The Redbirds shot just 3-for-6 from the charity stripe, but every free throw mattered.

Darlington's 26-25 lead at halftime held up versus the Panthers as the SWAL squads played even in the second half of the Redbirds 52-51 victory.

Mitchell Erickson scored 16 points to lead Darlington with little brother Alex, a freshman, right on his heels with 15. Alex buried three 3-pointers in the victory.

Wat. Luther Prep 73, New Glarus 70

Phoenix sophomore Dante Kuehl is an intimidating fellow.

The 6-5 post beat the Glarner Knights down low and popped beyond the three-point arc for five triples en route to 33 points in Luther Prep's 73-70 Capitol Conference crossover road victory.

New Glarus got 16 from Jake Bast and 15 apiece from Cassidy Flannery and Logan Lockard in the shootout defeat.
