Hardyman sparks Redbirds to first win

DARLINGTON - Senior Brandon Hardyman hit a three-run home run in the first inning and the Darlington baseball team held on for an 8-6 win over River Valley on Monday.

"The big positive is we didn't make any errors," Darlington coach Matt Austin said. "We have struggled with that in the other games. It's a positive step in the right direction."

Darlington junior Griffin Heinberg pitched six innings and gave up five earned runs on nine hits to get the win. He struck out four and walked five.

The Redbirds (1-3) had five hits and were led by Hardyman who went 1-for-2 with a home run and four RBIs. Junior Andrew Kelly also was 1-for-2.

Albany 14, Argyle 8

ARGYLE - Albany's field was unplayable, but the Comets didn't miss a beat when the game was moved to Argyle.

Albany (3-1) scored four runs in the fifth inning and six in the seventh to cap a comeback win. The Orioles committed three errors in the seventh and Albany senior Cody Schulz had a two-run triple to left for the Comets.

"Albany won the game by hitting the ball," Argyle coach Chuck Bredeson said. "I told them after the game it's a lot more fun to play in a game when you are in it. We still have some kinks to iron out. We did a lot better tonight."

Albany sophomore pitcher Ethan Pfeuti started and went four innings, allowing four earned runs on seven hits. He struck out four and walked two. Senior Ty Mauerman pitched two innings and got the win. Mauerman gave up two runs on four hits. He struck out two.

Schulz went 3-for-4 to lead the Comets. Pfeuti was 3-for-5 and Mitchell Kauk was 2-for-4.

Argyle (0-4) had 12 hits. Sophomore Rhett Starr went 3-for-4 to lead the Orioles while freshman Kyle Olson was 2-for-3 and sophomore Alec Treuthardt was 2-for-5 with a double.

Treuthardt started and pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing six earned runs on eight hits. He struck out eight and walked four. Freshman Colton Ploessl took the loss after pitching 2 2/3 innings in relief. He gave up five earned runs on four hits. He struck out three, walked one and hit one batter.
