MADISON - The Monroe No. 1 doubles team of juniors Ellie Grossen and Chandra McGuire won a match at the WIAA Division 2 subsectional on Monday, qualifying them for the sectional.

Grossen and McGuire defeated Big Foot's Zoe Klesmith and Avery Aurand 6-3, 6-3.

"Ellie and Chandra played one of their best matches of the year," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said. "They were very focused and motivated on the court. The team they played from Big Foot was a quality opponent, but Ellie and Chandra played smart and forced the Big Foot players into errors."

The Cheesemakers finished in a fifth-place tie with Jefferson and Big Foot with four points. Madison Edgewood outdistanced McFarland for the lead 24-16.

At No. 2 doubles, Monroe's Allie Coplien and Chelsea Miller were the No. 5 seed and lost to fourth-seeded Natalie Boldger and Claire Kenny 7-6, 7-6. Sophomores Erin Gellings and Paige Prien, as the No. 4 seed, defeated fifth-seeded Hannah Ripkey and Michaela McCabe of Big Foot 6-3, 6-2. The Cheesemakers' No. 3 doubles team then lost to No. 1 seed Martha Longley and Maggie Seibert of Madison Edgewood 6-1, 6-1.

Whitewater's Michaela Schramm (23-0) defeated Monroe's Macayla Quinn at No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-0. At No. 2 singles, Monroe's Alisa Fager lost a three-set match to Lake Mills' April Trewyn 4-6, 6-1, 10-7. McFarland's Andrea Butcher (18-1), who was the No. 2 seed, beat Sarah Wong 6-4, 6-2. At No. 4 singles McFarland's Katie Heitman, who was the No. 2 seed, defeated Sarah Sabatke 6-1, 6-0.

"In a tournament, your draw is so important," Saugstad said. "The draw didn't turn out the way we hoped, and it led to some very tough matches. With the way subsectionals is set up, there is no consolation draw so if you lose, you're done.

"Our singles really got tough draws and played against some good quality opponents. Sarah Wong played a nice match against McFarland. Sarah put a lot of balls back and had her opponent frustrated for a while with her consistency."

Grossen and McGuire will play in the sectional Wednesday in Whitewater.
