Green County had 20 compete, one win at state meet

APPLETON - On the weekend of March 20, the Green County Golden Gators took 20 swimmers to the Schroeder YMCA for the Wisconsin State Swim Championships.

The Gators finished with three titles, all from Marissa Berg. In the 11- and 12-year-old girls age group, Berg broke state records in both the 50 freestyle and the 50 backstroke, along with finishing first in the 50 butterfly. Her 50 freestyle time was good enough to reach the national cut time.

Berg also finished second in the 100 individual medley and third in the 100 freestyle. She also was on the relay team that finished eighth. The relay included Angie Beaver, Corlissa Robertson and Alyssa Dale.

Will Fenner (13-14-year-old boys) placed third in the 200 backstroke, fourth in the 100 backstroke, 11th in the 200 IM and 15th in 100 butterfly.

Rachel Root placed sixth in the 100 backstroke, seventh in the 200 backstroke, 11th in the 100 breaststroke and 18th in the 100 fly.

Mitch Keith (9-10-year-old boys) finished seventh in the 100 freestyle, 15th in the 100 IM and 16th in both the 50 and 100 backstroke.

Noah Zimmerman (8-and-under boys) was sixth in the 50 freestyle, eighth in the 100 freestyle and ninth in both the 25 butterfly and 100 IM. In the same division, Travis Wolf finished ninth in the 50 freestyle, 11th in the 50 backstroke, 13th in the 100 IM and 14th in the 25 backstroke.

Grace Keith (8 and under girls) finished fifth in the 50 backstroke, 10th in the 25 backstroke, 25th in the 50 free and 28th in the 25 fly.

Leanna Schwartzlow, at 16 years old, was the only local swimmer in the oldest age group. She finished 16th in the 400 IM, 18th in the 200 breaststroke, 22nd in the 100 breast and 20th in the 200 IM.

Paul Fenner, Spencer Keith, Jim Curren, Grant Keith, Anna Meritt, Abigail Rogerson, Jack Rogerson, Nicholas Quinn and Lucas Quinn also participated.
