MONROE - Grafton erupted for 10 goals in the first period to roll to an 18-0 win over the Monroe boys hockey co-op in the season opener Saturday.
Grafton's Taylor Snider scored four goals and had four assists, and Danny Likins scored three goals as each earned a hat trick to lead Grafton.
"We were kind of shell-shocked," Monroe coach Josh Smith said. "It was like a deer in the headlights look. I'm just chalking it up to half the team being new guys. It was definitely not the outcome we expected or wanted. We got better each period."
Monroe goalie Dan Guilliams had 27 saves.
"It's the first time he has seen this competition," Smith said of Guilliams and other Avalanche skaters. "This is our first game. There is plenty of things to work on. A lot of things can be fixed by positioning."
Smith said there were flashes where players would get back into position, but they would collapse down too much. Grafton outshot the Avalanche 45-17.
"We had plenty of opportunities," Smith said. "We were just slow to pull the trigger."
Monroe will play at Madison Edgewood at 8 p.m. Tuesday.
