VERONA - A short-handed Monroe wrestling team lost five matches at the 12th annual Verona Duals Saturday.

Monroe junior Traiten Gorr, ranked No. 10 in the Wisconsin Wrestling Online Division 2 poll at 220 pounds, went 5-0 for the dual tournament.

Monroe coach Tom Witt said he knew going in it would be tough giving up 30 points due to five forfeits in the first three matches. The Cheesemakers forfeited matches at 106, 113 120 pounds as well as heavyweight.

"Heading into it, I said 'Don't look at the scoreboard and just focus on your match.'

"The one thing that is still a problem for us is when we get to our back we are getting pinned too much. It's something we have to improve on. It still comes down to experience and being able to react quicker to things," he said.

In addition to Gorr's unbeaten day, sophomore Hayden Arneson (182) went 4-1 and freshman Dempzy Foley (145) finished 3-2. In the first-round of the duals, Monroe lost to Lake Geneva Badger 66-6 and in the second-round, Verona beat the Cheesemakers 57-18. In the third-round, Watertown defeated Monroe 54-25. Portage and Monroe tied at 36, but the Warriors won the match on a tiebreaker, winning seven matches to the Cheesemakers' six. Black Hawk-Darlington beat the Cheesemakers 49-15. Lake Geneva Badger won the dual tournament and Monroe finished last out of eight teams. Black Hawk-Darlington finished fifth place.

The only win for the Cheesemakers against Lake Geneva Badger was Gorr winning on a forfeit.

The Cheesemakers posted three wins against Verona. The highlight was Gorr's 3-1 overtime win over eighth ranked Division 1 wrestler Trayvonn Johnson who was previously unbeaten. Gorr scored on a takedown in overtime to hand Johnson his first loss of the season.

"Traiten wrestled smart and never puts himself in a bad position," Witt said. "He understood the situation. He knew if he stayed focused and wasn't called for stalling, he would eventually get the win."

Gorr edged Black Hawk-Darlington's Taylor Evenstad 3-0 and beat Watertown's Brandon Church 10-0.

Arneson edged Watertown's Isaac Elsen 1-0 and defeated Verona's Peter Janssen 7-0. He posted a pin against Black Hawk-Darlington's Tyler Komprood and the only match he lost was 5-2 to Lake Geneva Badger's Reggie Kelly.

Dempzy Foley finished the day 3-2 and posted three pins. Monroe junior McKenzy Foley, who returned last Friday after an injury, went 2-2 and sophomore Cole Murray (126) was 2-3.
