MADISON - The Mat Rats came out hungry at last weekend's Wisconsin Youth Folkstyle State wrestling tournament at The Alliant Energy Center in Madison.
And none of them devoured more cheese than Trevor Gorr, who won his second straight state title at 210 pounds.
Reave Lincoln also ended up on the podium with a fourth-place finish at 185 pounds. Ryan Hughes fell one match short of making the medal round at 140 pounds. At 88 pounds, Aaron Hesgard won one of his two Friday-night bouts to make the second day of competition. Dusty Burkhalter lost two hard-fought bouts to miss Saturday's round.
Gorr won his first two matches Friday via pinfall before tacking another pin on a wrestler from West Salem Saturday morning. In the championship match, he won 7-0 over an opponent from Random Lake to take the title.
Lincoln won his first match Friday, 7-0, against a wrestler from Ozaukee before pinning a Rio wrestler in his second match. Saturday morning Lincoln lost by pinfall to an opponent from Mukwonago, but bounced back to take his second match of the day by pin over an opponent from Holmen. In his third-place match, he lost, 8-7, to a wrestler from Merrill to wrap up his tourney.
After an opening-night loss to a grappler from Chilton, Hesgard won his second match 13-3 against a wrestler from Spring Valley. A 6-2 Saturday-morning loss to a wrestler from Lancaster eliminated Hesgard from the tournament.
Burkalter lost a hard-fought bout 2-0 to a wrestler from West Bend before his second loss Friday night, a 7-0 decision to a wrestler from Ithaca, eliminated him from the tournament.
In his first match of the evening, Hughes won by pinfall against a wrestler from Cedar Grove. His second match of the night was a double-overtime 1-0 loss to a Weston opponent. Saturday morning, he pinned a wrestler from DeForest before his second match ended in a loss, 5-2, against a Merrill opponent.
Next up for some Mat Rat wrestlers will be the Folkstyle Nationals April 4-6 in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
