NEW GLARUS - After finishing fourth in the Capitol Conference tournament last year, the New Glarus boys golf team surged and made a run to a WIAA Division 3 sectional.

With three golfers returning from that sectional team, expectations are high that the Glarner Knights can make a move up the conference standings this season.

New Glarus sophomore Matt Hach took 25th in the regional last year after shooting a 91. Hach was second-team Capitol South All-Conference last year and averaged a 44 on nine holes as the Knights' No. 2 golfer.

"Matt Hach has a chance to step into the No. 1 role on our team," New Glarus coach Jonathan Goodness said.

The other returning golfers for the Knights are senior Cade Beutler and junior Cole Runde. Beutler served as the No. 3 golfer last year and averaged a 47 for nine holes. Runde was the fourth golfer most of last season.

"I know each has put in considerable work in the offseason and I fully expect these two young men to take a significant step forward from last year and compete at a high level for us," Goodness said.

There is a competition for the fourth and fifth spots on the team. Goodness said there are several JV players from last year who could step into some varsity matches based on past performances, including junior Jonah Thompson, sophomores Jack Erickson and Jacob Krantz.

"I'm anxious to see the improvement that they have made in the offseason," Goodness said. "With hard work and dedication, I believe significant gains can be made over the course of just one year."

Goodness pegs Lodi as the favorite to win the conference. He projects Lakeside Lutheran as the runner-up.

Goodness said New Glarus can be a darkhorse team in the mix for the conference title.

"I would expect to be in the top half of the conference," he said. "I expect our returning JV golfers to step up and perform as our No. 4 and No. 5 golfers on varsity."
