MONROE - Stephanie Wyss relished her last chance to run on the home track at the Simpson Relays.
"I have a lot of good memories," Wyss said. "I'm trying to do my best and go out with a bang."
Wyss teamed with sophomore Maria Eberle, junior Jaclyn Ditter and senior Tessa Frutiger to win the 1,600-meter medley relay at the 44th annual Simpson Relays. The 1,600 medley relay was led off by Eberle and Ditter who ran 200 each. Then Wyss ran a 400 and Frutiger ran the 800 anchor leg to help the Cheesemakers take first with a time of 4 minutes, 28.53 seconds.
"It's nice to be able to mix it up between the distances," Frutiger said. "It's definitely bittersweet. We get a great crowd that comes out to watch. It's a big race. We pride ourselves on having a good home invite."
Sun Prairie won the girls Simpson Relays championship for the third straight year and the fourth in the last five years. Sun Prairie outdistanced Burlington 91.3-75 for the girls title. The Cardinals also won the combined girls and boys title. The Cheesemakers finished fourth as a team with 59.3 points just behind Stoughton (67.3).
The Cheesemakers started out with a bang in the 1,600 distance medley.
"It's definitely unusual," Wyss said. "It's something new."
The Cheesemakers' 1,600 relay team of Lizzy Dale, Frutiger, Molly Hlubek and Wyss finished second with a time of 4:18.71. Wyss also teamed with Ditter and Brenna Bazley to take second in the long jump with a combined distance of 47-0 3/4.
"Relay meets kind of allow you to stack them up and see what can happen," Monroe coach Curt Miller said in certain events. "We haven't had a lot of reason to really work our girls overly hard early this year. Today was a good day to pick up a couple of new ones to see what we can do."
Wyss cleared a lifetime best 5-feet in the high jump on her final attempt as she combined with Molly Wyss and Veronica Andraski to take third (13-8).
Monroe finished third in the hurdle shuttle as Kirstie Hinojosa, Ditter and Abby Jacobson finished in 55 seconds. The Cheesemakers' distance medley relay team also finished third.
"It feels really good," Wyss said. "It just gives me more confidence when I jump."
The Cheesemakers' 800 relay team of Brenna Bazley, Ty Gibson, Jess Miller and Eberle took fourth (1:52.91).
"We ran a good time without good sticks," Miller said. "As the year goes on the handoffs will get better. It's nice to be running a good time without the handoffs being there."
The 3,200 relay team of Dale, Alexa Yurs, Molly Wyss and Tess Seichter finished fourth (10:28.08). The pole vault trio of Laura Chopp, Andraski and Eberle also finished fourth (22-0).
Every senior on the girls track team competed at the Simpson Relays.
"It's a nice opportunity to get some kids in who have put in a lot of time into Monroe track and field," Miller said.
