MILTON - Senior Garrett Gogin and junior Carter Sawdey combined to knock in eight runs to power the Monroe High School baseball team to a 12-3 win over Milton on Tuesday.

Monroe improves to 7-6 overall and 4-3 in the Badger South, just one-half game out of first place in the conference behind Oregon (4-2).

Sawdey went 3-for-5 with three RBI and four runs scored. Gogin finished 2-for-4 with five RBI. Milton was plagued by nine errors.

"All of our batters were hitting the ball hard and putting the ball in play," Monroe coach Dustin Huffman said. "It was a tough night to field baseballs with the wind and cold weather."

The Cheesemakers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Sawdey singled and took second when a Red Hawks' outfielder bobbled the ball. Junior teammate Cole Murray moved Sawdey to third base on a sacrifice bunt. Gogin drove in a run on a groundout. Senior Jaron Kuester then reached on a dropped fly ball. The Red Hawks then dropped a fly ball in center hit by Edwards. Kuester scored on the play to give the Cheesemakers a 2-0 lead.

The Cheesemakers broke the game open with a five-run second. Junior Hunter Weckerly doubled to left. Junior Isaac Allen doubled to right, but Weckerly was held up at third base. Sawdey then lined a two-run double to center to give the Cheesemakers a 4-0 lead. Murray reached on an error and then stole second base. Gogin delivered a two-run single to left to extend the Cheesemakers' lead to 6-0. Edwards came through with an RBI single to center to put the Cheesemakers ahead 7-0.

Allen went 2-for-4 with three runs scored.

Edwards pitched a complete game to get the win. He gave up three earned runs on six hits. He struck out seven and walked four.

"We told him to try to get ahead and stay ahead," Huffman said. "For the most part he controlled the game. He pitched very well."
