Glarner Knights set sights on Marshall

NEW GLARUS - The king of the Capitol South Conference boys basketball hill the past four years has been Marshall. New Glarus coach Travis Sysko is looking to change that this week.

Marshall has won 38 straight conference games. New Glarus was the last team to beat Marshall in conference but that was during the 2011-12 season. New Glarus (8-5, 3-0 Capitol South) will carry an unbeaten record into its conference showdown with Marshall (10-3, 3-0) at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at New Glarus High School.

"It's not a done deal for whoever wins or loses the game," Sysko said. "Whoever wins is certainly in the driver's seat and controls their own destiny. I wouldn't say the season is riding on this game."

Marshall features a lineup with great size, led by 6-foot-4 point guard Adam Link, who averages 13.5 points per game, and a pair of 6-5 post players in junior Adam Wehking (12.8 ppg) and Andy Lutz (7.0 ppg).

The leading scorer for the Cardinals is senior sharpshooter Brandon Neuberger (16.4 ppg). The Cardinals run an open post offense that features a lot of cutting and passing.

"They (Marshall) are big, and Wehking is a big body who is skilled and very athletic," Sysko said. "Their guards can shoot it and run the court well. I think a key will be rebounding and defensive position. I think we need to limit them to one shot and one and done. We will need to get help on the back side with our defensive position."

New Glarus and Marshall have played six comparable games.

The Knights defeated Columbus 83-77, rolled past Poynette 76-39, knocked off Wisconsin Heights 68-45 and beat Belleville 71-56. Lake Mills topped New Glarus 73-61 and Lakeside Lutheran cruised past the Knights 100-65.

The Cardinals beat Columbus 68-57, rolled past Poynette 71-40, edged Lakeside Lutheran 75-73, blasted Wisconsin Heights 82-36 and knocked off Wisconsin Heights 66-38. Lake Mills defeated Marshall in the season opener 53-43.

New Glarus uses a dribble-drive offense that relies on penetration and includes a lot of kick-out passes for 3-point shots. The Knights rely on a uptempo offense that likes to score in transition.

The Knights have eight players averaging 7.0 points or more, led by senior Gavin Binger (12.8 ppg), freshman Zach Feller (12.7 ppg) and senior Trey Taylor (10.4 ppg).

Feller knows a way to negate the Cardinals' size advantage.

"We just have to get out and run," he said. "Each game we have a player who can put up 20 a night. It may be a different player each night."
