MONTICELLO - Upon further review, the Ponies are still winless.
While one referee initially signaled Sarah Silver's 35-foot heave from right down the middle of the court good, his co-worker waved off the potential game-winning triple to give visiting Juda a 25-23 girls basketball victory Tuesday night.
"I'm not going to blame the refs," said Monticello coach Heath Eliason, whose club hit just three of eight fourth-quarter free throws. "Fact is that if we hit a couple more free throws or don't turn the ball over, it's a different finish."
The Ponies (0-10, 0-5 Six Rivers East) forced a turnover off a Juda inbounds play with three seconds left before Silver nearly got off the desperation shot.
Juda sophomore Larissa Klemm enjoyed her return to the lineup after starting every game before missing Thursday's loss to Belmont with an injury. She was one of just two Panthers to score with 19 points and hit five 3s, the most crucial bomb being the winner with 10 seconds to play.
Silver led Monticello with eight points as MacKenzie Hilliard had seven, but was plagued by foul trouble throughout.
Things get no easier for the Ponies as they travel to Black Hawk on Friday. Juda also faces a tough draw as it seeks its fourth win in its last five games. The Panthers will be entertained by Pecatonica on Friday.
Dodgeville 47, Brodhead 40
The Dodgers picked up something for free Tuesday night in Brodhead.
Dodgeville hit seven of eight fourth-quarter free throws in upending the Cardinals in a non-conference battle that saw Brodhead shut down offensively in the second half.
The Cardinals, who had three double-digit scorers (Kristen Ruchti and Dana Lewis - 11 points; Alyssa Harding - 10), scored just seven and eight points in the third and fourth quarters, respectively.
The Dodgers were led by McKenzie Forseth's 15 points, while Chelci Reynolds added 14.
Brodhead looks to bounce back when Palmyra-Eagle visits Thursday.
Darlington 44, Fennimore 40
Mariah Gibson made her lone two points count.
The Darlington junior had struggled all night from the field - along with her Redbird teammates - and still coldly drilled a 10-foot pull-up runner with 20 seconds left to propel her squad over Fennimore at home Tuesday night.
Darlington (6-2 overall, 3-1 SWAL) coach Kurt Cohen praised Gibson for having the courage to take the shot considering her track record all night.
"You wouldn't have never known she was struggling all night," Cohen said.
Cassie Fink led the Redbirds with 17 points and was 9 of 10 from the line in the victory.
Pecatonica 57, Argyle 40
The two-man game was too much for the Orioles.
Pecatonica's (10-1 overall, 5-0 Six Rivers East) duo of Kimee Chandler and Brittany Kent combined for 39 points and gave Argyle (7-5 overall, 2-4 Six Rivers East) fits in the Vikings' 57-40 home victory.
Kent scored a game-high 25 points and Chandler had 14 to go along with 10 assists, most of which when to Kent.
"They've got to guard her (Chandler) tight," Pecatonica head coach Josh Tarrell said. "(And) Brittany finds that little spot."
Nine Orioles scored in the loss and were led by Tina Dammen's seven points.
