GIRLS BASKETBALL: Comets orbit beyond Monticello

MONTICELLO - The Albany girls basketball team used a big second-quarter run to get a 50-41 win over Monticello Thursday night.

The Ponies whittled a 10-point deficit down to four with about three minutes to go, but the Comets were able to hang on for the victory.

Albany (9-7, 5-3 Six Rivers East) outscored the Ponies 16-5 in the second quarter.

"We just had some costly turnovers and I don't know what to attribute it to," Monticello coach Paul Wedig said.

Albany sophomore Hayli Peach scored a game-high 16 points to lead the Comets. Sydney Bump added 10 points, Nicolette Blumer had seven and Hillary Best chipped in six.

Monticello (4-9, 2-5) was led by senior Sarah Silver who had a team-high 14 points. Haley Blum, Desiree Marty and Taylor Pfeuti each added six points for the Ponies.

NEW GLARUS 37, BELLEVILLE 31

NEW GLARUS - The Glarner Knights will have bragging rights for at least one night after assuring a season split with a conference rival.

New Glarus survived a defensive battle to beat rival Belleville.

"It was an intense game," New Glarus coach Braden Rindy said. "We are big rivals. The girls all know each other."

New Glarus (3-9, 2-3 Capitol South) was held without a field goal in the first quarter. The Wildcats led just 2-1 at the end of the first quarter.

The Knights outscored the Wildcats 13-6 in a decisive third quarter.

New Glarus junior Michelle Preston led the Knights with 10 points. Alissa Siegenthaler and Tanya Gruter scored nine points each.

BOSCOBEL 58, DARLINGTON 42

BOSCOBEL - The Redbirds couldn't hang on to the momentum they built in the first quarter.

Darlington (9-5, 4-4 SWAL) was tied 8-8 with Boscobel after the first quarter, but the Bulldogs surged to a 16-point halftime lead. Bascobel outscored the Redbirds 28-12 in the second quarter.

Boscobel helped its cause by hitting 14 of 21 free throws. Darlington senior Kari Blosch led the Redbirds with a team-high 18 points, including three 3-pointers, and Ashley Martin added 10.
