SHEBOYGAN - The Green County YMCA Gems Gymnastic Team competed at the Sheboygan YMCA for their fifth meet of the 2013-14 season on Feb. 1-2, with the Level 1 and Level 3 teams bringing home trophies for first place and fourth place, respectively.
The Level 1 Gems team remains undefeated this season, bringing home the gold from every meet. Three Level 1 team members received first place all-around honors in their age groups at the Sheboygan meet. Tess Nafzger took first place on the beam, floor, vault and all-around for age 12, Hailey Thompson swept all events taking first and was first-place all-around for age 8, and Maddie Davis was first on the beam, floor, vault and all-around age 7. Also receiving medals for Level 1 were Morgan Kleeman with second place on the beam, floor and all-around age 8 and Katelyn Kleeman with a third-place finish on the beam.
Receiving medals in Sheboygan for the Level 2 team were Jessy Ruckman, second place on the bars and beam and sixth-place all-around age 9. Also, Sophie McGuire was first on the bars, second on vault and fifth-place all-around in the 7 and under group. Kaegann Paulson took fifth place on the vault in the 7 and under group.
Several Level 3 Gems brought home medals also. Heather Burkhalter was first on the vault and bars and fourth-place all-around in the 12 and over group. Maddison Markham placed seventh on the vault and third on the beam earning her fourth-place all-around for 11-year-olds. In the 10-year-old group, Kaylea Paulson took first on the beam, fifth on the bars and fifth-place all around; Maddie Deegan was seventh on the bars, second on the beam, ninth on the floor and eleventh all-around; and Jill Marty placed eleventh on the bars. Riplee Dunlavey earned first on the beam, seventh on the bars and second-place all-around for 9-year-olds and Karis Paulson placed third on the bars, fifth on the floor and fourth all-around also in the same age group.
The Level 3 team brought home a fourth-place team trophy in a hard-fought battle where they were only .75 of a point out of first place.
Maggie Setterstrom was the lone medal earner at Level 4, placing first for her floor routine.
The Gems will compete the first three weekends in March, ending with the Wisconsin YMCA State Championship meet in Green Bay March 15-16.
