Fury take 2nd in Hartland tourney

HARTLAND - The Rock County Fury girls hockey team finished second place in the six-team Arrowhead Turkey Tourney Friday and Saturday in Hartland.

The Fury (3-1) got off to a slow start in the first game against Arrowhead Friday with a scoreless first period. At 2:51 into the second period Zoie Steig scored a power-play goal on an assist by Maggy Henschler. Arrowhead was unable to answer back.

Late in the game in a desperate attempt, Arrowhead pulled the goalie to add another skater. At 16:41 into the period, Alyssa Knauf snagged the puck and fired into the empty net to give the Fury a 2-0 win.

The Fury outshot Arrowhead 36-14.

On Saturday, the Fury took on Brookfield and rolled to a 7-2 win. Albany sophomore Haley Knauf scored two goals. With six seconds left in the first period, Henschler put the puck away on a pass from Dani Heitsman.

In the second period, Heitsman scored a short-handed goal to give the Fury a 2-1 lead. Ally Burke added another short-handed goal in the second period. Steig also scored in the second period on a pass by Burke.

Haley Knauf scored her first high school game goal early in the third period. Heitsman scored on a power-play on an assist from Henschler to give the Fury a 6-2 lead. With nine seconds left of the game, Haley Knauf scored her second goal on an assist from her sister Alyssa Knauf. The Fury also outshot Brookfield 28-15.

The Fury received the No. 1 seed and took on Bay Area in the championship game. Bay Area clipped the Fury 3-2 in a shootout for the title.

McKaylie Buescher remained strong in net for the Fury, earning another shutout in regulation. The Fury outshot Bay Area 35-19. The game remained scoreless after regulation. To settle tournament standings, a three-person shootout ensued. Two of the three Fury players - Heitsman and Henschler - had goals in the shootout, but Bay Area put away all three of their shots to edge the Fury.
