BELLEVILLE - Sugar River's 5-0 win over Lake Mills Saturday was Wheaties box material for Jon Fox.
The Sugar River junior midfielder scored four goals and also had an assist.
"Everybody on our side stepped it up and did their best today," Fox said.
Sugar River (3-2, 2-0 Capitol) scored all of its goals in the first half, which started with a score by sophomore midfielder Otto Kienitz just 3 minutes, 22 seconds into the contest.
"The kids really came out to play in the first half. We had great intensity and just kept winning the ball," Raiders head coach Matt Belknap said. "We knew Lake Mills (4-4-1, 1-1 Capitol) had some firepower, we saw what they did to Cambridge-Deerfield (4-1 win on Thursday, Sept. 3). They really won some respect from the guys."
Thanking Fox for the assist just five minutes later, Kienitz sent him a pass, who the sent a shot passed Lake Mills junior goalkeeper Evan Lawton.
In the 17th minute, Fox scored again off of a pass from junior Brett Ellenberger.
"Everybody played their best and everybody stepped up," Fox said.
Kienitz assisted Fox's third goal in the 27th minute.
"We didn't know who it was going to be (to score our goals). We knew it was going to be somebody, but today it was Jon," Belknap said. "We like to attack defensively as well, and for that to happen we have to adjust. These kids are smart. They are the smartest team I have ever coached."
Carlin Moen sent a perfect one-timer pass to Fox from across the field with under five minutes left in the half. Fox's laser kick, from over 35 yards out on the left side, screamed past Lawton one last time for the game's final goal.
"I kind of just hit it. I knew it was going to go somewhere," Fox said. "Whatever works."
The Raiders pressured Lake Mills on multiple occasions in the second half, but came up empty on each. However, with the large lead, Sugar River was able to play everyone on the roster.
"We've gotten a lot of contributions from a lot of people offensively. And our defenders are really filling in solidly, and we are seeing some good contributions from the bench. We've got a great group of guys," Belknap said.
Senior goalkeeper Eric Liegel had three saves in the first half, and junior varsity backup Alex Gocht had two big saves in the second half to preserve the shutout.
"We feel good so far this season. We had some good non-conference games and have had a couple good wins already. I think these kids are ready," Belknap said.
Sugar River travels to Lakeside Lutheran (3-2, 1-0) on Thursday for another Capitol Conference battle.
