FORT ATKINSON - A moment of lost focus turned into a huge blow for the Cheesemakers Tuesday night. With seven seconds left in a 1-1 game, Fort Atkinson found a way to punch in the game-winning goal.
"It was a lack of focus in the last seconds, thinking the game is over and it wasn't," Monroe coach Miriam O'Neill said.
Fort Atkinson had taken an early lead, scoring in the 15th minute and it took nearly 30 minutes of game time before the next score.
"After that first goal, we had a hard time regrouping. We made some changes at halftime and it seemed to work," O'Neill said.
Vanessa Studer sent a corner kick into the box and Monroe's Kylee Ritschard found the back of the net at the 45:45 mark in the second half to tie it. From there, the Cheesemakers were in full defensive mode.
"The wind played a huge factor for both teams. It was very competitive at both ends. The last 20 minutes we were playing very defensively.
Katie Coplien had 13 saves in goal for the Cheesemakers (3-3-1, 1-2 Badger South). Monroe got off 16 shot attempts on offense.
