FORT ATKINSON - The Monroe football team's bid to have its first winning season since 2003 came up short with a 29-8 loss to Fort Atkinson in the regular-season finale Friday night.

Monroe (4-5, 1-5 Badger South) played without six defensive starters due to injuries and an incident before the game that resulted in a code violation for some players. Monroe junior Jacob Kind missed the game due to a broken arm, junior Timmy Thoman has a broken foot, and sophomore Brayden Zettle has a foot injury.

"We were very short-handed," Monroe coach Curt Miller said. "We had a lot of distractions before the game even started. It was nice to see our kids play one good half of football. That forced a lot of kids to play two ways. Fort just wore on us in the second half."

Monroe junior Tyler Elmer had a 1-yard TD run late in the second quarter. On a fake extra point, Elmer tossed a two-point conversion pass to Alex Tordoff to give the Cheesemakers an 8-7 lead at the half.

The Blackhawks scored 22 unanswered points to beat the Cheesemakers.

Monroe junior Isaac Allen rushed for 60 yards on 13 carries.

Elmer was 7 of 11 passing for 40 yards. Tordoff had three receptions for 32 yards.

Monroe senior Jaron Kuester, who returned from a broken hand, had an interception.
