Focusing on the mental game of golf

NEW GLARUS - Youth will be served on the New Glarus golf team this spring.

The Glarner Knights return just two experienced varsity golfers in junior Mason Lockard and senior Dan Gerber. New Glarus will open the season with a Capitol Conference mini meet that will feature all eight conference teams Monday at Columbus.

"It will definitely be those two to lead us if we are going to have any success," New Glarus co-head coach Ken Zimmerman said, of Lockard and Gerber. "Those two guys' scores will have to count in most matches. Mason, I hope will shoot 42 or under each match and Dan won't be too far behind."

The Kinghts are also banking on sophomores Lucas Lagan, Dylan Wolber, Derek Breezer and senior Corey Breezer to contribute on the varsity this season.

"We will be young," Zimmerman said. "We know that. I think we can be in the middle or top half of the conference. We just need to get more consistency."

Cambridge, who has been to state the last two years, again will be a team contending for a Capitol Conference championship.

"They will be the favorite," Zimmerman said.

The Knights have focused on every aspect of the game including a mindset that successful golfers carry.

"We have been trying to work on the mental side of the game more," Zimmerman said. "Last year we spent more time on the physical part and not as much time on the mental part. We want to avoid the big numbers. A bogey will not kill you."

Zimmerman just wants his golfers to eliminate unforced errors and wants his team to not allow a tough hole to linger throughout the match.

"We are trying to shave a few strokes from the mental side of it," he said. "It sounds easier than it is."
