DARLINGTON - Three Redbirds were named first-team all conference for the 2009-10 boys basketball season in the Southwest Athletics Conference (SWAL).
Junior guards Alex Erickson and Tucker Weigel, as well as senior forward Tanner Havens were named to the first-team list. Senior forward Jason Boll was honorable mention.
Erickson led all SWAL scorers with a 22.6 points per game average in conference play, edging out Cuba City senior guard Evan Richard (21.6). Richard, a Wisconsin-Milwaukee recruit, edged Erickson in the regular season scoring mark, 23.3 ppg to 21.1 ppg. Richard also was named conference player of the year.
Darlington head coach Mike Hopkins was co-coach of the year in the SWAL, sharing the honor with long-time Cuba City head coach and Wisconsin's all-time winningest coach Jerry Petitgoue.
The Cubans had four first-team selections.
Cuba City and Darlington finished as conference co-champions, with identical 13-1 records. The two teams split the season series, with Cuba City winning at home Jan. 15, 57-53, and Darlington taking the season finale Feb. 26, 63-53. Cuba City, long ranked as the state's top team in Division 3, beat Darlington in a regional final in Monroe March 6, 74-59. Cuba City lost its next game to Poynette, just two games from state.
