JANESVILLE - A hard day's work came down to a flip of the coin Saturday for the Monroe boys soccer team.

The Cheesemakers won two of three games Saturday in the Janesville Parker Invitational. That put them in a three-team tie for the event championship, which was settled by a coin flip.

In the end, the coin flipped in Sheboygan Falls' favor for first place, and Monroe finished second in the four-team invitational.

Sheboygan Falls was the only team Monroe couldn't get a score against Saturday. The Cheesmakers lost their first game of the day, 1-0.

But things turned around starting with the second game, in which Monroe beat host Janesville Parker 3-2. Kelli Isaj scored the first goal for the Cheesemakers in the 25th minute of the first half. Monroe's second goal came just 1:55 into the second half, when Godi Brandli put the checkered ball into the back of the net. Andrew Aurit got on the board just over two minutes later to secure the lead and the win.

In the third game of the day, Monroe knocked off Elkhorn, 1-0. Jon Elmer took a pass from Isaj and scored in the 12th minute of the game.

With a three-team tie for first place, the original tiebreaker cut the first- and second-place teams to Monroe and Sheboygan Falls. A coin flip decided the overall champion.

Cheesemaker head coach Tony Stamm said he was happy with his team's performance.

The Cheesemakers (5-11, 0-5 Badger South) play next at Monona Grove on Tuesday in a conference showdown.

In the junior-varsity tournament, Monroe beat Sheboygan Falls 2-1, Parker in an overtime shootout, and Elkhorn, 2-0, for the title.
