LA CROSSE - Five Monroe wrestlers are still alive for medals at the Bi-State Classic.
The Monroe wrestlers still vying for medals include senior Kevin Klopfenstein (138 pounds), senior Dusty Burkhalter (182), senior Aaron Hesgard (132), senior Trevor Gorr (220) and junior heavyweight Brett Zimmerman.
Klopfenstein and Burkhalter each went 4-0 on the first day of the 54-team tournament and are still in contention for first place in their respective weight classes. Hesgard, Gorr and Zimmerman can still wrestle back for third place. The top 12 at each weight class medal.
"We are sitting in a good position," Monroe coach Jeriamy Jackson said. "Everyone of these guys should medal. It's just how far up the ladder will they climb."
Klopfenstein pinned Hillsboro's Katie Blaha in 51 seconds. He defeated Cuba City-Southwestern's Josh Donar 5-0 and edged La Crosse Aquinas' Mason Miller 3-0. He stayed unbeaten by pinning Caledonia's Dylan Stemper in 4:57.
Burkhalter pinned Portage's Brandon Askey in 1:25 and he pinned Cashton's Dylan Scharping in 2:02. He edged Cuba City-Southwestern's Forrest Thill 3-0. In the quarterfinals, Burkhalter edged Tomah's Jason Reisinger 5-4.
"Dusty is having a great tournament," Jackson said. "He is wrestling smart. I think he is surprising himself."
Hesgard pinned Royall's Caleb Overton in 1:18 and he defeated Marshfield's Luke Mahoney 5-2. New Richmond's Abram Anderson pinned Hesgard in 1:25. Hesgard then defeated Mauston's Jason Tomaloff 7-0 to keep his medal hopes alive.
After a first round bye, Zimmerman pinned Royall's Landori Robertson in 1:21. He followed that up with another pin. In the quarterfinals, Zimmerman was pinned by Holmen's Hunter Hauser in 3:16.
Junior Ryan Hughes (160) after a forfeit, defeated Richland Center's Brandon Banker 4-2. Hughes then lost to Lancaster's Ethan Soderstrom 4-1. Cuba City-Southwestern's Lucas Kastner defeated Hughes in a heartbreaker 3-2.
Trevor Gorr received a first-round bye. After the bye, Trevor defeated Bloomington-Kennedy's John Riebel 3-0. Hudson's Eliot Motu then edged Gorr 4-2. In the wrestlebacks, Trevor pinned Hillsboro's Jake Stockwell in 2:44.
Traiten Gorr (170) also won two of his first three matches. He pinned Portage's Josh Parks in 3:50. West Salem-Bangor's Josh Peters then pinned Traiten Gorr in 4:44. He bounced back and pinned Boscobel's Gunner Pitzer in 2:21. Traiten then lost a consolation wrestleback to Lancaster's Cody Glass 5-2.
Troy Gorr (195) finished 1-2 and pinned Stratford's Miguel Ochoa in 2:23. Monroe senior Jesse Keizer (126) was thrown in his first match and lost due to an injury default. Keizer, who later was diagnosed with a concussion, then lost to New Lisbon's Bailey Slater 2-1. He didn't wrestle any more matches after that.
"After that first match, he (Keizer) just wasn't the same," Jackson said.
