Fifth-place doesn't meet expectations

MONROE - Monroe girls cross country coach Brian Jefferson expected the Cheesemakers to turn in a better performance than a fifth-place finish at the Bruess Invitational Tuesday at Twining Park.

Wahlert had five runners in the top 10 and outdistanced Dubuque Hempstead 25-51 for the Bruess Invitational title. The Cheesemakers finished fifth (169) behind fourth-place Mount Horeb-Barneveld (114) and third-place Sauk Prairie (98).

Jefferson said it was a rough night for the Cheesemakers and there were several factors that contributed to the fifth-place finish.

"I don't think we were physiologically ready to race; meaning we weren't hydrated, we probably didn't get enough good sleep the past few days," Jefferson said. "Our fitness level all across the board is pretty darn good right now, it is just too bad we couldn't showcase that in front of a nice home crowd."

Monroe sophomore Abby Rogerson was the top finisher for the Cheesemakers taking 31st place with a time of 15 minutes, 3 seconds. Monroe sophomore Lizzy Dale took 34th (15:14) and senior Rachel Rogerson was 41st (15:31). Freshman Nicole Witt finished 45th in her first varsity race with a time of 15:44 and junior Molly Hlubek took 46th (15:47).

Jefferson said the Cheesemakers have about four runners who could be the No. 1 runner at any time.

"Tonight it was Abby Rogerson," he said. "That is a good thing to have. To know that a teammate will be there to pick you up when you are down really helps."

Albany had two runners in the top 10 and four of the top 30 runners, but didn't place as a team since they didn't have five runners at the meet. Albany freshman Bailey Hlavachek finished sixth with a time of 13:51 and senior Rosy Bauman took ninth (13:55). The Comets ran without junior Jessica Mauerman and senior Courtney Pfeuti who was playing volleyball.

"We knew she (Hlavachek) was talented coming in and would help us," Albany coach Tony Brewer said. "If you go by the top four runners from Wisconsin schools, we may have finished first. It would be really close."

Pecatonica-Argyle junior Kendra Sigg finished 11th (14:05) and the Vikings finished 10th. Pecatonica-Argyle sophomore Emma Marion took 35th (15:15).

New Glarus Monticello finished eighth as a team. The Knights were led by junior LouAnn Judd who finished 27th (14:55) and junior Jessie Pratt who was 47th (15:47).

Albany junior Ciara Kubesh took 24th (14:47) and senior Ingrid Kallgren was 30th (14:57).

"We obviously had a great race today," Brewer said.

After the boys have qualified for the state cross country meet the last two years, Brewer expects the girls to contend.

"They have to prove themselves," he said. "The girls team needed confidence. I think this race did that for them."
