MONROE - In a battle of undefeated teams, the Monroe Fifth Grade White fought to a 0-0 tie against the DeForest Black on Saturday.
All 18 players contributed significantly to a defensive effort that limited DeForest to 81 total yards. Connor Allen, Nick Bansley, Tim Beckman, Jared Dillon, Julian Gruber, Deion Hargrove, Darien Hargrove, Logan Leuzinger and Payton Sawdey all having multiple-tackle games.
Coaches said keeping players fresh on defense was essential to the outcome of the game, so having a solid rotation that included Noah Amacher, Dustin Gough, Noah Becker, Dylan Fahrney, Ben Figi, Henry Hanson, Dayne Lawinger, Cael Losenegger and Judson Rikkers was a key.
Monroe was only able to muster 48 total yards of offense on the day with Sawdey rushing for 28 yards on three carries, but they remained unbeaten at 5-0-1. The Fifth Grade Red's game at St. Francis was canceled.
The Fifth Grade White will travel to take on Poynette Saturday.
Sixth Grade Red
Monroe defeated the West Regents 12-8 on a muddy Saturday.
Tyler Triem, Evan Blumer, Colby Argall and Evan Thompson rushed for a combined 171 yards for Monroe. Argall rushed for a touchdown, and Blumer passed for a 5-yard touchdown to Kade King. Seth Ballard, Jabob Setterstrom, Gabe Witt, Wade Sweeney, Kyle Lovelace, Ethan Kleckler and Ben Dunlavey led the way on the offensive line.
On defense, the Blaze had a strong performance. Sweeney and Argall led with eight tackles apiece. Thompson, Ballard and Lovelace each had four tackles, and Lovelace recorded two fumble recoveries. Jacob Amacher recorded an interception.
Monroe host their final home game against Waunakee Black.
The Sixth Grade White's game at St. Francis was canceled.
Seventh Grade
Monroe lost to Poynette 16-0 on Saturday, bringing their season record to 4-2. Brady Buol and Nick Quinn recovered fumbles on defense, and Joe Crubaugh, Jevon Gibson, Sam Kind, Joe Hughes, Kieran Bazley, Brett Dorsey, Robert Leden and Allen Clerkin led the way on the offensive line.
The offense could not move the ball consistently against the Poynette defense, coaches said, but positive gains were made by Jonah Tostrud, Brayden Zettle, Dempzy Foley, Dylan Scace and John Fuller.
Eighth Grade
In a Saturday battle of unbeatens between the Monroe Eighth Grade team and Sun Prairie, Monroe came out on top 16-0.
The defense, which held Sun Prairie to 48 total yards and only three first downs, was led by Tyler Johnson, Kyle Walters, Alex Tordoff, Jacob Kind, Dylan Beaver, Cole Murray and Issac Allen. Allen scored on a 63-yard interception return.
Offensively, Monroe was led by runningbacks Cole Murray, Carter Sawdey, Jacob Kind and Tyler Elmer. Elmer scored on a one-yard touchdown, and Ryne Miller was 2 for 2 on PAT's.
Monroe will attempt to finish their season unbeaten this week when they travel to take on Portage.
