Monroe sophomore Tessa Frutiger looks to make her move during the 4x800-meter relay event.
CLINTON - It's better late then never for the Monroe girls 400-meter relay team.

Despite only running together a few times this season, the 400 relay team of freshman Breanna Bazley, sophomores Stephanie Wyss, Jess Miller and Ty Gibson won a regional championship in 53.04 seconds.

"I would at least like to make it to state in the 400 relay," Wyss said.

Both Bazley and Miller said qualifying for the WIAA Division 2 Bascobel sectional was the goal.

"We were a little nervous coming into it," Gibson admitted.

Monroe girls track coach Curt Miller said he was relieved the Cheesemakers won the 400 relay.

"We just thought this was one of our better chances to get a relay through," Miller said. "We didn't practice handoffs until today from one to two."

The Cheesemakers won the Clinton WIAA Division 2 Clinton regional in a landslide over Big Foot, 133.8-96. The Cheesemakers qualified 12 individuals and all four relays for the Bascobel sectional on Thursday.

"I figured we would be in the ballpark to win it," Miller said. "It's a credit to them. They performed really well."

The Cheesemakers' 1,600 relay team of Madeline Arnold, Tessa Frutiger, Gibson and Wyss finished first with a time of 4 minutes, 14.77 seconds.

Meaghan Tomasiewicz qualified for the sectional in two individual events, taking second in the high jump (5 feet). She also cleared 9 feet in the pole vault. Liz Knutson also cleared 9-0 in the pole vault finishing second to Tomasiewicz on a tiebreaker after the rain hit. Gibson finished second in the 100 (:13.26).

Claire Wyttenbach qualified for the sectional in both the 100 hurdles (:17.77), third; and 300 hurdles (:52.24), fourth.

The Cheesemakers' other sectional qualifiers include Wyss, who placed third in the long jump (15-9 1/2); Calyn Bidlingmaier, second in the 800 (2:31.7); Paige Hoesly, third in the triple jump (32-4 1/4); Tess Seichter, third in the 3,200 (12:25); Dallas Tourdot, third in the shot put (33-1 1/2) and Carmen Lawver, fourth in the shot put (32-5).

Sugar River (Belleville-New Glarus) dominated the long distance events. The Raiders' 3,200 relay team of Amanda Crary, Alison Schmitz, Rachel Miller and Ashley Beutler finished first ahead of the Cheesemakers with a time of 9:48.04.

"We knew Monroe would push us," Sugar River coach Dan Schettler said.

Two years ago Sugar River was the state runner-up in the 3,200 relay. Placing at state in the 3,200 relay is within reach.

"At this point, it's always to get to the next level," Schettler said. "I think they have a shot this year. It's always nice to be in the running."

The Raiders also had two of the top three 1,600 runners. Beutler won the 1,600 in 5:16.67. Brodhead-Juda sophomore Shannon Klein took second (5:36.20) and Schmitz of Sugar River was third (5:37.66). Beutler also took first in the 3,200 (11:14.56) and teammate Carly Brown was second (12:20.25). Klein won the 800 with a time of 2:26.08.

"It's really more important getting the place than the time," Schmitz said. "I just really want to save it up for sectionals."

Beutler summed up the competitive feelings of most athletes this time of year.

"You run your whole season working for these last three meets," Beutler said. "You just hope it goes as planned."
