Fall River outlasts Warriors

SOUTH WAYNE - In a battle of unbeaten teams, Fall River sophomore Kelly Tramburg hit a key 3-pointer to help the Pirates hand Black Hawk a nail-biting 49-48 non-conference loss Monday, Dec. 23.

With less than 2 minutes to go, the 5-foot-10 Tramburg took an inbound pass and knocked down a 3-pointer to give the Pirates a 44-43 lead. Tramburg scored a team-high 18 points.

"We had a breakdown defensively and they made us pay for it," Black Hawk coach Mike Flanagan said. "We had a bad rotation."

Black Hawk senior Jen Wellnitz, a University of Wisconsin-Green Bay recruit, scored 22 of her game-high 27 points in the second half. Black Hawk (4-1, 2-0 Six Rivers East) trailed 20-14 at the half, but fell behind by 12 points in the third quarter. The Warriors went on a 20-0 run in the second half and led 33-30 to start the fourth quarter. Black Hawk senior Michelle Flanagan scored nine points and made one 3-pointer. Wellnitz hit two 3-pointers.

"It was an admirable comeback," Flanagan said. "We would rather not be in that position. We try to schedule good non-conference opponents to give our kids some exposure. Hopefully, it will make us better. It's a good growing game as long as we use it that way."

The Warriors had four players that picked up four fouls. Wellnitz sat out most of the second quarter and sophomore Aleigha Sigafus and senior Mikayla Sigafus both missed stretches of the game.

The Pirates (5-0) were 11 of 27 at the free throw line and the Warriors were 3 of 5.

"There was a big disparity at the free throw line," Flanagan said. "They (Fall River) attacked and we were on our heels from the get-go. A lot of it had to do with them attacking and we were out of position or we didn't finish and get the defensive rebound. They gave us a lesson in rebounding."

Black Hawk will look to stay unbeaten in the conference as they host Argyle on Friday, Dec. 27.
