MONROE - Evansville handed the Monroe boys soccer team a 3-1 loss Tuesday at Honey Creek Park.
Monroe junior Niven Tomasiewicz scored a goal 39 seconds into the game to give the Cheesemakers a 1-0 lead.
"We wanted to start quick," Monroe coach Tony Vasquez said. "You always think you have the advantage if you score that first goal."
The advantage didn't last long: Evansville's Lema Roberts scored a game-tying goal at 6:01.
The Blue Devils added two second half goals. The second goal was set up off a corner kick.
Vasquez said the Cheesemakers made a couple mistakes defending the corner kick and that led to Zachary Wells scoring the go-ahead goal at 59:35 to give the Blue Devils a 2-1 lead. Evansville's Benjamin Liaga scored the final goal at 78:01 to beat the Cheesemakers and end their two-game winning streak.
Monroe senior captain Matt Coplien missed his second straight game due to a concussion.
"It was a close game throughout," Vasquez said. "We kind of ran out of gas in the end. It seems like we have a problem with our depth. We will have to find a way to conserve some energy."
With the loss, Monroe drops to 3-3. Monroe will host Sauk Prairie at 5 p.m. Friday at Honey Creek Park.
