EVANSVILLE - Hunter Weckerly and Brad Ripp combined to allowed just two hits by Evansville, but the Blue Devils took advantage of multiple mistakes by the Monroe High School baseball team for a comeback 3-2 win on Friday.
Monroe (5-6, 2-3 Badger South) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Monroe junior Cole Murray, who went 2-for-3, singled and stole second. Senior teammate Garrett Gogin delivered an RBI single. Gogin took second on a throw home. Senior Jaron Kuester followed with an RBI double to left center to give the Cheesemakers a 2-0 lead.
"Any time you walk five guys and have three errors it's tough to win," Monroe coach Dustin Huffman said. "It was a tough night to hit with the wind blowing in. It was the end of a tough two-week stretch with nine games in two weeks."
Monroe also had two wild pitches and one passed ball.
Evansville scored two unearned runs in the third off Weckerly. Evansville's Zac Wille reached on an error. Weckerly walked the next batter. Wille scored on a passed ball to cut the Cheesemakers' lead to 2-1. Evansville's Johannes Haakenson reached on an infield single that knocked in the game-tying run on a hit Monroe shortstop Trevor Signer made a diving stop on.
Weckerly walked the Blue Devils' lead-off batter in the fourth. After a wild pitch, Evansville came through with a go-ahead RBI double to give the Blue Devils the win.
Weckerly pitched four innings and gave up three unearned runs on two hits and walked five. Ripp pitched two shutout innings in relief.
"We told them to forget this game," Huffman said. "We have two important conference games against Edgewood and Milton next week."

ALBANY - The night started bad but got better for the Albany High School baseball team Friday.
The Comets couldn't overcome five errors in the first game of a doubleheader and lost 6-4 to Highland. However, Albany finished strong with a 10-0 win.
Albany is now 6-2 overall and 4-1 in the Six Rivers East Conference. The first game of the twinbill was counted as a conference game, while the second was nonconference.
"It started out frustrating," Albany coach Mitch Heinemeyer said. "We had two really bad innings with two errors each and that gave them all of their runs. It gave a tough loss to Brock (Gilkes) because he was pitching his tail off."
Gilkes threw all seven innings, allowing six hits and one earned run. He struck out four and walked two.
Cole Trapp, who was 2-for-3, hit a solo home run in the fourth inning to draw the Comets within 3-1.
Travis Oliver drove in the other three Albany runs with a one-run single in the sixth and a two-run single in the seventh.
Albany had the bases loaded with two outs in the seventh but failed to score.
"But we carried that momentum and fight into the second game and played a great game," Heinemeyer said.
Tyler Dahl was 4-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI in the second game. His brother, freshman Josh Dahl, was 3-for-4 with two RBI.
Freshman Corbin Kelley got the win. He started and pitched five innings, giving up two hits, striking out three and walking two.
