MONROE - Errors doomed the Monroe baseball team Wednesday night, as the Cheesemakers committed nine errors in their 11-0 loss to Stoughton.
Senior Ryan Erickson started on the mound for Monroe. Erickson gave up nine runs in his five and one-third innings of work, but only one of those runs was earned. Monroe coach Dustin Huffman said his team's struggles in the field are more mental than physical.
"At this point, I think it's the mental approach some of the kids are taking," he said. "They're all capable of making the plays. In practice, they do a great job of making plays. For some reason, when it's game time they make a mistake and it tends to snow ball. We had four errors in the first. Any time you give them four runs because of four errors, it's tough to come back from."
Monroe did, however, outhit the Vikings, 5-4. Junior Ryan Hughes was 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Cheesemakers. Huffman said that, overall, offense isn't of great concern for his team, but he would like to see them be more aggressive at the plate.
"Tonight, against (Stoughton's Cade) Bunnell, he threw a little bit harder. We were a little hesitant in the strike zone. We're better when we're aggressive," he said. "We have to get back to the approach of looking to hit middle away. There were a couple tonight we hit hard, just right at people."
Monroe (1-4, 0-3 in the Badger South) gets right back at it today with a doubleheader at Waunakee.
