MIDDLETON - The Monroe football team lost a shootout to Madison Edgewood 40-27 Friday at Breitenbach Stadium in Middleton.

Monroe senior Cody Wolf rushed for 207 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead the Cheesemakers.

However, Monroe (2-5, 0-5 Badger South) had no answer for the Crusaders' offense. Edgewood quarterback Jack Dunn racked up 329 total yards and scored six touchdowns to lead the Crusaders (2-5, 1-3) to their second straight win. Dunn rushed for 172 yards on 10 carries and scored two touchdowns. He was 9 of 13 passing for 157 yards and tossed four touchdowns.

"I think he definitely had his best game against us," Monroe coach Curt Miller said. "We knew he was good. He was Edgewood's most valuable player of the game no question. Our defense played a great second half. We were just in too much of a hole in the first half."

Wolf was injured and left the game midway through the third quarter.

"We did a nice job up front offensively," Miller said. "He (Wolf) was having a great game. He may have been having concussion symptoms. It probably hurt us not having him in there in the second half. Our trainer cleared him (to return to the game), and he will play next week."

Edgewood's Bryce Haefer had four catches for 102 yards and three touchdowns. It was more than the Crusaders' offense that haunted the Cheesemakers. The Cheesemakers had 11 penalties for 102 yards and had two fumbles.

Dunn connected with Haefer on a 55-yard TD pass in the first quarter. Wolf then scored on a 1-yard run and Cam Shaw caught a two-point conversion pass to give the Cheesemakers a short-lived 8-6 lead. Dunn then hooked up with Haefer on a 17-yard strike that gave the Crusaders a 13-8 lead. Dunn tossed his third touchdown pass 10 seconds into the second quarter to give the Crusaders a 19-8 lead. Wolf had a 1-yard TD run to cut the Crusaders' lead to 19-14. Dunn scored on a 44-yard run and Wolf answered with a 2-yard TD run.

The game-changing moments came when the Crusaders scored 14 points in the final 57 seconds of the second quarter. Dunn scored on a 53-yard run and Haefer caught a 15-yard TD pass from Dunn with 15 seconds to go in the second quarter to give the Crusaders a 21-point lead at the half. Dunn's touchdown pass was set up by a Cheesemakers' fumble.

"That was a big swing going from 26-21 and then going to 40-21 in the matter of one minute," Miller said.

Monroe sophomore Tyler Elmer tossed a 10-yard TD pass to Garrett Gogin in the third quarter. Elmer was 5 of 13 passing for 30 yards and one touchdown. Monroe junior Jaron Kuester had two receptions for 10 yards.
