MADISON - The Cheesemakers were swept right off the courts 7-0 by Madison Edgewood, the likely Badger Conference team champion.
"Edgewood is at a different level than us and the rest of the conference," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said. "Our effort was good, but we just couldn't overcome their tough shots and experience."
The sweep means that Monroe's previously unbeaten No. 1 doubles team of Carson Root and Garrett Tschanz has now been beaten. The duo lost to Tyler Piddington and Ben Winding 7-6 (5), 6-4.
"Carson and Garrett played a tough match. This was their first big test of the season. The boys had their chances, but just couldn't capitalize," Saugstad said. "They will improve because of this loss."
Top singles player Taylor Soddy fell 6-1, 6-2 to Austin Papenthein and Quinten L'Yvonnet lost his No. 2 singles match to Patrick Carney 6-1, 6-1. Luke Andraski and Jared Nix went scoreless in No. 3 and 4 singles.
Cristian Noriega and Jess Hager lost their No. 2 doubles match 6-1, 6-3 to Scott Bauer and Bruin Armwald. Patrick McKenna and Patrick Barney knocked off Kevin Kohlstedt and Josh Riese 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 3 singles match.
The Badger Conference tournament is scheduled for this Friday and Saturday at UW's Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison. Sub-Sectional start next week.
