MONROE - When the Cheesemakers face off against Madison Edgewood in any sport, you can throw the records out the window - including soccer.

"They (Edgewood) are always the team to beat," Monroe senior Luke Newcomer said Tuesday after his team lost 2-1.

Newcomer scored Monroe's lone goal with 28 seconds remaining in the first half.

"It feels pretty good considering it's my first full game playing," Newcomer said. "I think (the goal) boosted us a lot. We were down the whole game, then we got that goal and we kind of stepped up a little bit."

Edgewood got on the board 3 minutes, 47 seconds into the game to take an early 1-0 lead.

"We left one get in really early, and that was the game," Monroe boys head coach Tony Stamm said. "We were confident at halftime. We were talking about how we were going to win this one.

"Edgewood seemed like they were playing for the tie. They have three ties already in conference and it seemed like they wanted to tie and we wanted to win."

Neither team could come up with the clutch shot needed in the second half, with the Cheesemakers (1-5-0 Badger South) coming up empty on seven different free kicks and corner kicks.

"We were just trying to get it as close as we could to the goal and trying to get lucky. We weren't really setting up anything, we were just looking to get one in," Newcomer said.

Edgewood (2-1-3) thought they had the go-ahead goal at the 65:48 mark in the second half off of a header, but the officials called offsides.

"Whenever we play Edgewood it's a tight game. Sometimes it's a matter of who wants it most," Stamm said.

The Crusaders did take the lead nearly two minutes later. A free kick from 40 yards out went right towards Monroe goalkeeper Kramer Henning, but Edgewood's Ben Winding came from the blind side and headed the ball into the back of the net.

"Kramer was doing OK. On this field it's always the sun that plays a big factor and we didn't win the toss so then we had to look at the sun in the second half. That's always the hardest," Stamm said. "Protecting our goal is the thing we're going to be working on (the rest of the season)."

Monroe will likely host Wisconsin Dells (0-5 Badger North) in the Badger Conference Challenge at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, but Stamm said he might not know the opponent until sometime today.

Stamm also said the team was hoping for a large attendance for Thursday's game, the last home contest this year.

The Cheesemakers will travel to Platteville Oct. 12 to take on the Hillmen in the WIAA Division 2 playoff opener.
