MADISON - The defensive pressure from Madison Edgewood led to a series of big runs as the Crusaders rolled to a 56-27 win over Monroe Friday.
Madison Edgewood (2-3, 2-1 Badger South) jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter. The Cheesemakers cut the Crusaders' lead to six points at the end of the first quarter. The Crusaders went on an 8-1 run to start the third quarter and outscored the Cheesemakers 18-5 in the period to build a 19-point lead at halftime.
"They applied more pressure in the second quarter, and some of it was turnovers and some of it was they just play very solid in the halfcourt," Monroe coach Sam Mathiason said. "We needed to make the extra pass and be a little sharper so we can stretch them out."
Monroe sophomore Lexi Hilliard scored a team-high 10 points to lead the Cheesemakers. Freshman teammate Sydney Mathiason scored seven points. With the loss, Monroe drops to 1-5, 1-2 Badger South.
Edgewood was led by sophomore Katie Meriggioli, who scored 14 points and Estella Moschkau who added 13 points.
There was a lesson Mathiason wanted a young Cheesemaker team to take away from the loss.
"I think part of it is making sure we are focused," he said. "They are not going to give you anything easy."
