MONROE - Madison Edgewood junior Estella Moschkau scored a game-high 17 points and the Crusaders used a second-half surge to cruise to a 69-37 win over the Monroe High School girls basketball team Thursday on Senior Night.
Monroe sophomore Sydney Mathiason knocked down a 3-pointer before the buzzer sounded at the end of the first half to cut Edgewood's lead to nine points at 31-22. The Crusaders started the second half with a 24-4 run to build a 29-point lead.
"They just really seemed like they found another speed," Monroe coach Sam Mathiason said. "They executed and shot the ball well. They got on a roll and got that momentum. It's one of those things where Edgewood was better in the second half executing. We just have to find that consistency."
Sydney Mathiason scored seven points to lead the Cheesemakers. Freshman teammate Sydney Hilliard added six points.
Edgewood junior Katie Meriggioli had 16 points, and sophomore Caitlin Link had 13 points.
Monroe closed the regular season at 9-13 overall and 3-9 in the Badger South. Monroe finished in a fifth-place tie with Milton in the seven-team conference. With two freshmen and one sophomore receiving invaluable minutes, the Cheesemakers are still developing as a team.
The Crusaders, who returned four starters from a team that was a conference co-champion last year, finished fourth in the Badger South this year.
The Cheesemakers now turn their attention to WIAA Division 2 regional action. They host Mount Horeb at 7 p.m. Tuesday in a quarterfinal.
"We just have to be ready for Tuesday with Mount Horeb coming to town and see what we can do then," Mathiason said.
"Part of it is that experience. You just hope to develop that. It's all about taking the next step and trying to get better and learning from the negatives when things don't go your way. You just try to compete with the top teams in the conference."
