MADISON - The Monroe High School girls basketball team had a big test against second-ranked Madison Edgewood on Tuesday.

The Cheesemakers stayed with Edgewood in the first half before the Crusaders pulled away for a 67-49 win.

Edgewood, the Badger South co-champion last year, went on a 14-2 run to start the game. Monroe (1-1) hit five 3-pointers in the first half. Monroe junior Brooke Adams drilled a 3-pointer late in the first half to give the Cheesemakers a short-lived 24-23 lead. The Crusaders took control with a 14-2 run that stretched from the end of the first half into the second. The Cheesemakers got within nine points late.

"I don't think the score was indicative of the game," Monroe coach Sam Mathiason said. "I thought our kids really competed. I was really proud of their effort."

Monroe junior Lexi Hilliard scored a team-high 12 points and made three 3-pointers. Adams and freshman Sydney Hilliard each added eight points. Monroe freshman Emily Benzschawel and junior Jordan Hirsbrunner each chipped in six points.

With the Cheesemakers trailing by double-digits with about 1 minute, 30 seconds left, they went to a press that led to a couple of steals.

"I considered going to a press earlier," Mathiason said. "I was concerned with all of the multiple ballhandlers they have that we might get too exposed. I didn't want to give up a lot of easy ones."

Monroe will host Brodhead at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
