MONROE - Badger South Conference power Madison Edgewood cruised to a 7-0 win over Monroe on Tuesday.
"Edgewood has a lot of athletic players who are very dedicated to tennis," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said. "They hit harder than us, with more spin, and with more consistency. They just know how to play the game and they have a senior-dominated lineup with eight seniors on the team. Without a doubt, they are the best team in the conference this year."
The closest match against the Crusaders came at No. 1 doubles. Edgewood's Lauren Keller and Morgan Molitor defeated Monroe juniors Ellie Grossen and Chandra McGuire in three sets 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. Saugstad said the setup with varsity matches being played at Northeast Park and Twining Park hurt the No. 1 doubles team.
"Ellie and Chandra went without coaching from early in the second set until late in the third set," he said. "This is one of those situations where it is unfortunate that we are the only team in the Badger Conference who has to play varsity matches at two different locations.
"In the second set, Ellie and Chandra fought back with aggressive net play and hard low shots. Unfortunately, Edgewood grabbed the first two games of the third set at deuce and then got out to a 3-0 lead. With Edgewood's big, aggressive shots, that was just too much to overcome."
Edgewood's Sara Murphy at No. 1 singles defeated Chelsea Miller 6-1, 6-0. Miller was playing No. 1 singles in place of Macayla Quinn who was out of the lineup with an injury. At No. 2 singles, Marieke VanRybroek defeated Alisa Fager 6-0, 6-0. Jessie O'Brien defeated Monroe's Sarah Wong at No. 3 singles 6-0, 6-0. At No. 4 singles, Kate Zellmer defeated Sarah Sabatke 6-1, 6-0.
Edgewood's No. 2 doubles team defeated Allie Coplien and Erin Gellings 6-0, 6-1. At No. 3 doubles, Edgewood's Maggie Seibert and Martha Longley beat Paige Prien and Amber Jenson 6-0, 6-3.
