MONROE - Defensive breakdowns have not shook the Monroe Senior Legion baseball team's confidence this summer.

Defensive breakdowns played a big part in Edgerton's sweep of Monroe in a doubleheader with 7-5 and 12-4 wins on Saturday.

Monroe committed seven errors in the second game of a doubleheader and couldn't recover.

"It's the first time all summer we let errors bother us," Monroe Senior Legion coach Eric Losenegger said. "It just kind of snowballed. This summer when we have made an error someone has stepped up and made a play."

Monroe (4-9, 4-3 Southern Wisconsin State Line League) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first game. Mitch Riese singled and Kramer Henning delivered an RBI single. Kevin Klopfenstein also came through with a clutch RBI single to give Monroe a 2-0 lead. Henning went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Trent Einbeck walked and stole second in the second. He scored on a wild pitch to give Monroe a 3-1 lead.

Edgerton scored two runs in the third to tie it at 3. Edgerton broke through against Monroe starting pitcher Ryan Erickson in the fourth. Lars Olstad singled up the middle and Joe Bright beat out an infield single. Cam Wileman hit a go-ahead RBI single to center to give Edgerton a 4-3 lead.

"We gave them five outs in the fifth inning," Losenegger said. "It's a game of miscues."

Evan Deegan had an RBI single up the middle in the sixth to give Edgerton a 5-4 lead. Trailing 5-4 in the seventh, Monroe relief pitcher Alex Einbeck walked in a run and Collin Gregory had an RBI groundout.

"We left a lot of guys on base," Losenegger said. "We failed to come through with a big hit with guys on base like we have done the last couple of games."

Monroe committed four of its seven errors in the first inning of Game 2 and three of Edgerton's four runs were unearned.

Logan Weckerly pitched 4 1/3 innings and gave up four earned runs on six hits. He struck out one and walked two.

Riese, who went 3-for-4, with two runs scored and one RBI, singled in the bottom of the first and he scored on Austin Burandt's sacrifice fly. Monroe cut into the lead in the second when Ryan Hughes doubled. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Riese's fielder's choice to cut Edgerton's lead to 4-2.

Trailing 5-2 in the sixth, Monroe had the bases loaded with two outs and Henning lined out to left field.

"You can't ask for a better situation," Losenegger said. "We had the bases loaded and our hottest hitter up. He hit the ball hard. The left fielder made a nice play."

Edgerton answered with a four-run fifth to take a 9-2 lead. Klopfenstein was 2-for-3 and Burandt tossed 1 2/3 innings of shutout relief.
