OREGON - Senior pitcher Hogan Edwards battled through some uncharacteristic wildness on the mound, and Oregon scored five runs in the first inning en route to a 6-1 win over the Monroe High School baseball team Tuesday.
Edwards walked three in the first, and the Panthers pounced.
"He was a little bit wild," Monroe coach Dustin Huffman said of Edwards. "I thought the strike zone was tight early on, but it was like that for both pitchers."
Three plays in the field in the first inning could have helped slow the Panthers' momentum. The first was when the Panthers scored a run on a passed ball. The second came on a steal of second that turned into a close play but went the Panthers' way, and the final play was an RBI single on a fly ball that Huffman said maybe could have been caught.
"If we make those plays they probably only score one or two runs," he said. "That was the difference in the first inning."
Monroe (1-4, 0-1 Badger South) had eight hits. Edwards went 3-for-4 with a double, and senior Isaac Allen was 2-for-4 with one RBI.
"We did hit the ball harder and put the ball in play more," Huffman said. "It was an improvement from the weekend. We still left too many on base. Any time you get eight hits you hope to score more than one run. It just comes down to coming up with that clutch hit."
Edwards pitched 42⁄3 innings and gave up five earned runs on six hits. He struck out seven and walked five.
Sophomore Dagon Rach pitched 11⁄3 shutout innings in relief.
Monroe hosts Stoughton on Thursday.
