MONROE - Some of the faces may have changed, but the result was still the same for the Monroe girls tennis team.
With a new lineup of doubles players, Monroe stepped up to repeat as Cheesemakers Doubles tournament champions Saturday.
Monroe received championships from its No. 1A doubles team of senior Kristin McArdle and junior Ellie Shuda as well as the No. 1 doubles team of senior Kelsey Erickson and junior Brooke McBain.
Monroe and Kenosha Bradford tied for the team title with 20 points. Baraboo finished second with 18 points just ahead of Lodi (17).
"I think this was a competitive year," Monroe coach Stephanie Miller said. "They stepped up and played hard. It was definitely a team effort to step up and win it."
The No. 1A doubles team comprised of the top two singles players - McArdle and Shuda - went 3-0 to win the title. McArdle and Shuda opened the tournament by defeating Beloit's Kathleen Murphy and Mary Mueller 6-1, 6-2. The highlight of the tournament for McArdle and Shuda was the championship match where they defeated a pair from Kenosha Bradford that included 2009 Division 1 state singles qualifier Karyn Guttormsen in three sets 1-6, 6-4, 10-3. Guttormsen was the Division 1 state runner-up last year.
"That was a really intense championship match," Miller said. "The girls knew they would have a tough match. I think they thought they would go in and give it a fight. It was really a fight. I don't think they thought they would win it. It was really an exciting win for them."
Erickson and McBain at No. 1 doubles defeated a Kenosha Bradford's Marissa Garretto and Bryanna VanBlarcom 6-1, 6-0 in the championship match.
"They easily walked through their championship match," Miller said.
The Cheesemakers' No. 2 doubles team of junior Lily Priewe and senior Alyssa Quinn defeated Stoughton for third place. Monroe seniors Katie Coplien and Elisabeth Brunner beat a Stoughton tandem to take third place at No. 4 doubles. Seniors Becca Flannery and Rachel Thompson at No. 3 doubles finished in fourth place after dropping a third-place match to Lodi.
Miller wasn't caught off guard by the Cheesemakers' success.
"I'm not exactly surprised," she said. "The girls worked really hard for it. All the girls playing have talent."
The Cheesemakers will play a Badger crossover match at Waunakee Tuesday.
"It will be a tough one," Miller said.
