MADISON - The No. 1 doubles team of senior Brooke McBain and sophomore Ellie Grossen got off to a successful start at the state tennis tournament Thursday.

McBain and Grossen made Monroe's girls tennis team's fourth straight appearance. The duo defeated Katie Thompson and Tori Klingler of Baldwin-Woodville, 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the second round at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.

McBain and Grossen will face Meghan Lineham and Margaret Faller (29-3) of Green Bay Notre Dame de la Baie Academy in the Division 2 tournament.

"The last few points were long, close volleys. But hopefully that prepared them for Friday's match against a number one seed," Monroe head coach Stephanie Miller said.

McBain and Grossen improved their record to 18-7 and will match up with Lineham and Faller, who had a first round bye, at 12:30 p.m. today.
