FORT ATKINSON - There's something about playing Fort Atkinson that brings out the best in Monroe senior Dempzy Foley.
Foley rumbled for a 20-yard touchdown run in overtime and then booted the extras point to give the Cheesemakers a thrilling 28-27 win over Fort Atkinson Friday. Foley beat the Blackhawks in the regular season last year with a game-winning field goal. The Cheesemakers then escaped Fort Atkinson in the Level 2 playoff game, 41-40 in double overtime.
Monroe has won the last three matchups against Fort Atkinson.
"They will be looking forward to when he (Foley) graduates," Monroe coach Toby Golembiewski said. "After two hard games with guys being out and it not ending the way we wanted, it feels great to keep the streak going and like a big weight has been lifted."
Fort Atkinson senior running back Draven Sigmund scored on a 2-yard run on the Blackhawks' possession in overtime. The Blackhawks missed the extra point and that gave the Cheesemakers (3-4, 2-3 Badger South) life.
"It was pretty even-steven," Golembiewski said. "That gave us a lot of life."
Monroe senior Sam Kind had a 5-yard TD run early in the second quarter. Junior running back Jordan Montgomery and sophomore Nick Bansley also had touchdown runs.
The Cheesemakers' defense had three interceptions, including Bansley's team-leading fourth INT of the season.
"That turned things around," Golembiewski said. "It was bend, but don't break."
Monroe junior linebacker Jacob Amacher was injured during the game and taken to the hospital.
"He went to the hospital, but he's going to be OK," Golembiewski said.
