NEW GLARUS - The New Glarus boys basketball team got off on the right foot Tuesday in the first round of the WIAA Division 3 regional, edging Belleville, 55-49.

"We looked all right tonight," New Glarus head coach Travis Sysko said.

The Knights opened the game running, taking a 16-11 lead after the first quarter and holding a 28-20 advantage by halftime.

However, things weren't especially easy for New Glarus (16-5).

Belleville (8-13) tied the score at 40-40 with 5 minutes, 41 seconds left before the Knights sparked themselves down the stretch, going 10-for-12 from the free throw line in the final frame.

"We were able to make our free throws when Belleville was trying to get back in the game," Sysko said.

Senior guard Jake Bast led New Glarus with 15 points. Cameron Jeglum had 12 points, and Logan Lockard and Cassidy Flannery each had six. New Glarus hit six 3-pointers and finished 15-for-19 from the free throw line.

Belleville's Dylan Schulz had 17 points, Colton Crye had 10 and Ryan Hendrickson and Eric Stoikes each had seven.

New Glarus on Thursday hosts Darlington, which knocked off Mineral Point on Tuesday.

"Darlington is a good team with some solid players," Sysko said. "We're just happy to be playing another day."

DARLINGTON 57, MINERAL POINT 49

DARLINGTON - The Redbirds used a huge third quarter, sparked by Tucker Wiegel, to top conference rival Mineral Point in the first round of the Division 3 playoffs.

Darlington (13-8) trailed 29-19 at halftime, but a 24-7 third-quarter run gave the Redbirds a seven-point lead headed into the final frame.

The biggest reason for the second-half turnaround? Wiegel, who hit back-to-back 3s midway through the third to trim the score.

"Tucker's two 3s cut the score to 34-31," head coach Michael Hopkins said.

The Pointers tied the score early in the fourth quarter, but the Redbirds came out on top of the see-saw battle in the frame.

"We were getting to the line, but we weren't always making both free throws," Hopkins said. Darlington finished 22-for-34 from the free throw line in the game.

Alex Erickson led the Redbirds with 22 points. Tanner Haves scored 13 and Wiegel finished with 12.

"Now we have to make some adjustments for New Glarus. They can shoot and have kids that play really well off of the bench. It will be a different type of game than what we're used to seeing," Hopkins said.
