MONROE - After overcoming a broken wrist, Monroe's Ian Shaw didn't know what to expect at his first swim meet of the summer against Platteville on Saturday.
Shaw, 8, won the 8 and younger 25 freestyle and the 25 backstroke. Shaw finished first in the 25 freestyle with a time of 28.61 seconds, which was just 0.23 seconds ahead of Monroe's Zachary Meighan. He also edged out Meighan by 0.23 seconds to win the backstroke. Meighan finished first in the 50 freestyle (1:04.52).
"I was a little surprised," Shaw said after winning the 25 freestyle. "It feels really good."
Shaw and Meighan teamed with Teagan Knobel and Evan Knobel to win the 100 medley relay (3:59.80). Devin Zweifel took first in the 25 breaststroke (56.39) ahead of Shaw who finished second (1:04.10).
Shaw knew the best way to beat the heat on Saturday was to swim.
"The best part of swimming is you get to be in the cold water," he said.
Platteville cruised to an 847-375 win over the Monroe Area Swim Team, but there were several stellar performances.

"It's easier to swim," Scace said. "You don't have to breathe. You don't have a lot of motion. You just move your arms up and kick."
