Monroe to host six-team tourney

MONROE - The Monroe softball team will host a six-team tournament Saturday and will also raise money for breast cancer research.

"There will be no admission charged for watching the games," Monroe coach Dale Buvid said. "Instead it would be nice if parents and spectators could instead donate a few dollars to the cause. All the money raised will be donated to breast cancer research groups."

The six teams are split into two pools of three teams each. The A pool features Monroe, Delavan-Darien and Juda-Albany. The B pool is made up of Kenosha Tremper, Orangeville and Freeport.

Monroe will play Juda-Albany at 11 a.m. Saturday at Twining East. Orangeville and Freeport will play at the same time at Twining West.

In Monroe's second pool game, the Cheesemakers will play Delavan-Darien at 2:30 p.m. at Twining East.

The first-place teams from each pool will play in the championship at 4:30 p.m. at Twining East. The second-place teams from each pool will play at 4:30 at Twining West and the last-place teams from each pool will play at 4:30 p.m. in Juda.

There will be a concession stand with brats, hot dogs and other snacks open at the park.

MONROE - Senior ace pitcher Natalie Dillon tossed a three-hit shutout to lead the Monroe High School softball team to a 10-1 win over Monona Grove on Thursday at Twining Park.

Dillon gave up one earned run and struck out seven. She walked just one.

Dillon also sparked the Cheesemakers (7-3 overall, 2-2 Badger South) at the plate, going 3-for-4 including a lead-off double to left center in Monroe's six-run first inning.

"She (Dillon) just threw harder and left fewer pitches over the plate," Monroe coach Dale Buvid said comparing her pitching performance Thursday to Tuesday's 13-11 loss to Fort Atkinson. "She threw with more pace and better location."

After Dillon doubled to lead off the first, senior Brooke Adams, who went 3-for-4, moved her to third base with a sacrifice bunt. Junior Carly Upmann followed with an RBI single to left. Senior teammate Hannah Vetterli singled and senior Kylea Ambrose reached when the Silver Eagles chose to throw to third base and the wild throw went into left field.

Senior Kaya Teasdale laid down a squeeze bunt to score Vetterli to give the Cheesemakers a 3-0 lead. Senior Cassidy Pivonka delivered an RBI single to right and junior Lexi Hilliard followed with a single to center. Junior Jessica Bennett came through with an RBI single to left to extend the Cheesemakers' lead to 5-0. Dillon followed with an RBI single to left to give the Cheesemakers a 6-0 lead they wouldn't relinquish.

"We came out hitting where we left off on Tuesday," Buvid said.

After pounding out eight hits in the first inning, the Silver Eagles limited the Cheesemakers to just two hits over the next four innings. That all changed in the sixth.

Hilliard singled to center. Monroe junior Megan Baumgartner then delivered an RBI double to center to give the Cheesemakers a 7-1 lead.

"She (Baumgartner) has some power and pop in her bat," Buvid said. "Megan put the game away. She is getting better and better all the time."

Upmann went 2-for-3 with two RBI, and Hilliard was 2-for-3.
