MONROE - Senior Mason Goff finished his wrestling season at the sectional in pain.

One week before track practice started, Goff had a MRI that confirmed he had a major tear in his meniscus. He had surgery to remove 50 percent of the meniscus. He's now getting back and catching his stride on the track. Goff anchored the Cheesemakers 400-meter relay team to a second place finish Friday at the 44th annual Simpson Relays.

"I still feel it sometimes," Goff said. "It's tolerable now."

Goff teamed with Alex Bartlett, Jeffrey Hill and Lucas Goetz to finish in 45.60 seconds, which was runner-up to Sun Prairie (:44.66). The Cheesemakers return half of their 400 relay in Goff and Bartlett who were an eyelash away from qualifying for state. The Cheesemakers missed qualifying for state in the 400 relay by .04 seconds last year.

"I think we have a chance as long as we work hard, don't get too sloppy and get our handoffs down."

Sun Prairie won the Simpson Relays over Monona Grove, 98-82. It's the fourth time in the last six years that Sun Prairie has won the boys title at the Simpson Relays. Monroe finished fourth as a team with 58 points just behind Burlington (59).

"We exhausted our funds on Tuesday night," Monroe coach Dave Hirsbrunner said of the Cheesemakers' dual meet win over Monona Grove. "We are backing off and resting some of our guys. We are matching guys up in different combinations. This is a perfect time to do it. Every school we were running against is Division 1. We bring in quality competition to this meet to have a great meet for people to watch. This will only make us better."

Hill cleared 12-feet, 6 inches in the pole vault. The Cheesemakers took second in the pole vault as Hill combined with Cameron Wahl and Evan Brady to rack up a total height of 35-0. Michael Reed led the Cheesemakers with a throw of 47-5 1/2 in the shot put. Reed along with Nick Walker and Mike Krohn threw a combined 135-3 to finish second.

The hurdle shuttle relay team of Justin Helton, Wahl and Caleb Ahrens took third (:51.53).

The Cheesemakers' 3,200 relay team of sophomore Luke Peterson, sophomore Joel Henry, freshman Matt Bush and junior Dylan Starck finished third with a time of 8:36.32. Sophomore Skyler Stingley, who ran on last year's 3,200 relay sat out with a minor injury.

"He's our top quarter miler," Hirsbrunner said. "We didn't want to risk anything."

The distance medley relay team of Henry, Starck, Peterson and Steve Christiansen took third with a time of 11:42.37. The 800 relay team of Bartlett, Godi Brandli, Goetz and Goff finished fourth (1:35.89) as did the Cheesemakers' triple jump trio of Mack Brunker, Brady and Garrett Grinnell (111-1 1/4). The discus team of Reed, Walker and Alex beaver took fourth (347-2).

The Cheesemakers are focused on the Badger South Conference dual season. Monroe will run another conference dual at Milton on Tuesday.

"We have to be a Tuesday team," he said.
