FORT ATKINSON - The Monroe High School girls track team swept the top two spots in the 200-meter dash and in the 100-meter high hurdles to win a Badger South Conference quadrangular meet on Tuesday.
Monroe racked up 88 points to edge Stoughton (85). Fort Atkinson finished third (72) and Milton fourth (24).
"It was definitely not planned out to win it," Monroe girls track coach Matt Davis said. "It was not something we were looking to do. It was really an example of some of our depth. In a lot of ways track is like poker. You don't want to show your hand too early to other teams in the conference."
Monroe senior Isabel Bazley won the 200 in a time of 28.4 seconds, and junior Josie Eberle took second (28.9). Junior Jordan Hirsbrunner won the 100 high hurdles (16.6), and junior Casey Rielly was second (16.61).
"It was nice to see two of our sprinters going 1-2," Davis said. "That is something we will be counting on and relying on at the end of the year."
Hirsbrunner won the 400 in 1 minute, 2.1 seconds, and she placed second in the shot put with a throw of 31 feet, 51⁄2 inches. Monroe's Brooke Rowe finished third in the shot put (30-41⁄2).
"Any time you get around 60 seconds in the 400 that is a really fast time, and she ran that in the wind," Davis said of Hirsbrunner.
Monroe freshman Cammi Ganshert outdueled Stough-ton's Kendra Halverson to win the 100 in 13.1 seconds.
"That will only be a confidence booster for her going into conference," Davis said of Ganshert.
Eberle won the pole vault (8-6), and sophomore Payton Sigafus took third (6-0).
Monroe senior Abby Oudinot won the triple jump (33-31⁄4), and junior Alicia Kuester took third (32-13⁄4). Kuester placed second in the long jump (14-8).
In the boys meet, Monroe finished third with 64 points. Stoughton won the meet 95.5-85.5 over Fort Atkinson. Milton was last (25).
Monroe junior Jake Kind won the long jump with a leap of 19-3.
"He (Kind) is incredibly athletic and if he puts his mind to it he could be very good in this sport," Monroe boys track coach Scott Mosher said. "He also nearly won the 100 meters."
Kind placed third in the 100 in 11.8 seconds, one-tenth of a second behind the winner.
Monroe senior Thang Lu won the 1,600 (4:37.3), and the Cheesemakers swept the top three spots. Sophomore Drake Ingold was second (4:43) and sophomore Dylan Scace was third (4:52.7).
"Both of those are great times in the cold and wind," Mosher said of Lu and Ingold's 1,600 finishes.
The Cheesemakers won the 3,200 relay in 8:56. Monroe sophomore Jonah Tostrud and Scace also helped the Cheesemakers win the 1,600 relay (3:36.7).
Monroe senior Mitch Keith cleared 12-6 in the pole vault to take second.
"He looked good on his attempt at 13 feet," Mosher said.
