DEFOREST - The Monroe Avalanche boys hockey co-op made strides in its second game of the season, dropping a road test 5-0 to DeForest on Saturday.

The Avalanche was coming off a 14-2 season-opening loss to McFarland. DeForest junior Garret Van Beek scored two goals in the second period to lift the Norskies. With the loss, Monroe drops to 0-2.

Monroe goaltender Dan Guilliams had 51 saves. DeForest's Brock Schomel was just as impressive posting 51 saves.

"The guys played fantastic tonight," Monroe coach Josh Smith said. "Our goalie Danny played a phenomenal game. The sole reason why it wasn't a tie game or better for us was the great game played by DeForest's goalie. No matter what we did, we just couldn't put one in. If the guys play like this for the rest of the year, we will easily hit my goal of being .500 for the season."

Monroe will play at Sauk Prairie Friday.
