MILTON - The Cheesemakers girls basketball team turned to its defense to remain unbeaten.
Monroe (8-0, 3-0 Badger South), ranked No. 1 in both the Associated Press and WisSports.net Coaches Division 2 state polls, beat Milton, 45-28, Friday night.
The Cheesemakers led 17-12 at halftime, but outscored the Red Hawks 15-8 in the third quarter to build a double-digit lead.
"We knew we really had to work hard on the defensive end," Monroe assistant coach Sam Mathiason said. "We were executing a little better and made the extra pass. We were just able to finish a few more than we did in the first half."
Monroe senior Jamie Armstrong scored five of her 18 points during the Cheesemakers' third quarter run.
Monroe junior Kylee Ritschard scored nine points and senior Gwen Sutter added seven. Fellow senior Ashley Hermanson had five points.
Monroe plays another Badger South game Tuesday, Jan. 12, at home against Stoughton.
