JEFFERSON - Brodhead-Juda senior Brekan Day, the defending WIAA Division 2 state champion in the high jump, repeated as the Rock Valley Conference champion in the event Saturday, clearing 5 feet, 10 inches.
Brodhead-Juda senior teammate Justice Tway finished second (5-10) after a tie-breaker and gave the Cardinals a sweep in the top two spots. East Troy captured the boys conference championship 110-98 over Jefferson. Brodhead-Juda (48) finished eighth in the 10-team conference meet. Day and Tway scored 18 points combined in the 1-2 finish in the high jump.
"It wasn't a really good day to jump," Brodhead-Juda boys track coach Nick Jarvis said. "The weather was nasty. I think Brekan did a nice job of staying focused. We look to get him peaking for the regional and sectional. We had a really good day in the high jump."
Tway added a third-place finish in the 400 (52.25). Day teamed with junior Jeff Williams, sophomore Dalton Naramore and sophomore Nick Naramore to take second in the 800 relay (1:34.28). The Cardinals' 400-relay team of Williams, Dalton Naramore, junior Theo Policastro and sophomore Max Harding took third (45.27).
"Our sprint relay teams ran well," Jarvis said. "The 800-relay team had their best time of the year. Overall it wasn't a bad meet, but I think we could have done better."
In the girls conference meet, Jefferson ran to the title 185-78.5 over Edgerton. Jefferson won 10 events en route to the championship. The Brodhead-Juda girls finished fourth (71) behind East Troy, which took third (78). Edgerton's Ashlyn Oren won four individual conference titles in the 100-meter dash (12.68), 200 (26.31), high jump (5-2) and long jump (17-11 ¼).
"It was a little bit of a letdown," Brodhead-Juda girls track coach Curt Gratz said. "I knew Jefferson had a really strong team. We thought we had a solid enough team to take second. It was a rough meet for us."
The Brodhead-Juda girls track team had four top-three finishes. Brodhead-Juda senior Madee Harding finished second in the 100 (13.05) and second in the 400 (1:0.68).
But injuries hit the Cardinals hard. Senior MacKenzie Byrne missed the meet due to a quad injury.
Harding went to the hospital in Fort Atkinson, where Gratz said she stayed overnight, and she didn't run in the finals of the 200. Junior teammate Lexi Oliver injured her ankle in the finals of the 100 hurdles, and Mackenzie Lang had a hamstring injury during the preliminaries of the 100. Due to the injuries, the Cardinals pulled out of the 400 relay, Gratz said.
He said he wanted to be cautious with the regional meet one week away.
"None of the injuries were season-ending," he said. "We wanted to be careful, so we can go hard at regionals."
The Cardinals' 3,200-relay team of senior Morgan Tresemer, junior Zoe Tresemer, junior Nicole Kamholz and freshman Madelyn McIntyre took third (10:31.78). McIntyre placed fourth in the 1,600 (5:34.75) and fourth in the 3,200 (12:15.78).
"Our 4x800 team ran really well," Gratz said.
Gratz said McIntyre had an impressive performance.
"She ran a leg of the 4x800 and then came back and ran the 1,600 and medaled and the 3,200 and medaled," he said. "I think that was really a strong performance by her."
Senior Cora Purdue finished third in the 800 (2:27.49).
Senior teammate Erin Nyhus took fourth in the 200 (28.04), and junior teammate Rhianna Teubert took fourth in the 100 hurdles (17.07).
"We will see if we can reload for regionals," he said. "If we are healthy, I think we can do really good at regionals."
